Deacon “Brownie” and Amelia Braungardt, their two children, eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, were honored as the Family of the Year by the Washington State Knights of Columbus at the KCs’ annual convention last month in Tukwila, Wash.

Deacon Braungardt ministers at St. John Vianney Parish, Spokane Valley, where he is a charter member of Council 8201.

The Braungardts were nominated for their long-time involvement in various parish ministries and activities. According to the nomination documents the Council submitted, “Brownie and Amelia have been involved in every aspect of church activity and have provided a pioneering spirit behind many of the church programs in existence today.” The couple has been involved in religious education for children and the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Amelia is a member of the parish’s liturgy committee and sacrament programs.

They also have been actively involved in what their pastor, Father Ty Schaff, calls “the largest and most effective parish-based outreach ministry in the Diocese of Spokane,” involving a food bank, a poverty fund, and other outreach to the poor.

“Their strong faith was transferred to their children and grandchildren by their love, understanding and devotion,” the Knights wrote.

The Braungardts celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last January.

Bishop William Skylstad also wrote in support of their nomination for the honor.

“As a couple in a parish, they have made a tremendous impact,” he wrote, “and truly are inspiring and admired by all.”

“Brownie has been a deacon for the Diocese of Spokane for many years,” wrote Bishop Skylstad. “He has accomplished that work with great dedication and commitment to the Church. Amelia, his wife, always gracious and sensitive to the needs of others, in her own right is such an outstanding person of holiness and great witness…. I would strongly support them in their nomination as the 2005 Family of the Year.”

Father Ty Schaff, St. John Vianney’s pastor, wrote of the Braungardts: “In my 10 years as pastor of this parish, Brownie and Amelia have provided an outstanding witness to the call of the Church to care for the poor and the hungry. Their names are synonymous with this ministry….”

“The care and compassion that they exhibit in their ministry is evidenced in the care and respect that shines in the five generations of their family,” wrote Father Schaff. “They have witnessed and shared their faith with each and every generation.”
