Mike and Winnie Doohan, long-time members of the Spokane Serra Club, traveled to Thailand last month – 22 hours of travel, 18 of those hours in the air – to attend the international Serra convention and promote the next international Serra gathering, set for next year in Spokane.
The Thailand convention, June 23-26, was held in conjunction with the Fourth Continental Congress on Vocations, attended by a number of representatives from several Asian countries.
The convention opened June 23 with Mass celebrated by the national chaplain of the Philippine Serra Club, Bishop Jesus Varela. Mass the next day was celebrated by Cardinal Michael Kitbunchu of Bangkok, president of the Thai Bishops’ Conference. June 25 saw Mass celebrated by Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski, Prefect for the Sacred Congregation for Catholic Education.
Cardinal Grocholewski was the keynote speaker that day as well.
Attending from the United States were Archbishop Elden Curtiss of Omaha, Neb., and Cardinal Justin Rigali, Archbishop of Philadelphia and Episcopal Advisor to Serra International.
In all, the convention brought together 132 priests, 53 women Religious, and 756 Serrans representing 32 countries.
The Serra Club promotes vocations to the priesthood and Religious life, and encourages the spiritual growth of its membership. The organization was founded in Seattle. Spokane was the second chapter established.
