Othello Vacation Bible School re-creates Jesus’ Jerusalem

(From the Sept. 8, 2005 edition of the Inland Register)

The Jerusalem marketplace was filled with the voices of the members of the tribes of Israel, the sounds of woodworking in the carpenter’s shop, the wonderful tastes found in the candy shop, and the enticing smells emanating from the bakery. A Roman guard walked among the people, making sure that order and obedience to Caesar was observed. During synagogue school, the rabbi read from the Torah, taught Hebrew letters, shared a Seder meal, and introduced the children to the customs and teachings of the Hebrews. The townspeople walked through the marketplace speaking about Jesus, discussing his miracles, and observing the disciples as they tried to understand what it meant to be a follower of Jesus. For one week in August, the children and youth of Sacred Heart Parish’s Vacation Bible School in Othello explored life in the time period when Jesus walked on Earth. The church basement was transformed into the Jerusalem marketplace, with tribal areas, a synagogue school, and an outside area as a wonderful playground and area to see the animals. Each day focused on a Bible point: Jesus is King; Jesus showed God’s love; Jesus loved us; Jesus died for us; Jesus lives. (IR photo from Sacred Heart Parish, Othello)
