Sister Ann Jean (Joseta Mary) Lanphier SNJM

Sister Ann Jean Lanphier of the Sisters of the Holy Names died Nov. 30 in Spokane. She was 87.

The funeral Mass was celebrated at the Convent of the Holy Names in Spokane on Dec. 2.

She was born in Butte, Mont., where she graduated from Girls’ Central High School. She enrolled in Marylhurst College, Ore., and after two years entered the Holy Names novitiate. She pronounced vows in 1940, and finished her bachelor’s degree.

She taught for 27 years in Holy Names schools, specializing in grades 1-3. She spent another 10 years as an art educator before beginning parish ministry at St. Francis of Assisi, Spokane.

After spending time with her sister in Portland, Sister Ann Jean returned to Spokane and the Convent of the Holy Names.
