(From the June 8, 2006 edition of the Inland Register)

Jesuit Father Kevin Connell has been named the new principal of Gonzaga Prep, Spokane.

Father Connell, a native of Butte, Mont., comes to Spokane after four years as the founding president and principal of St. Andrew Nativity School, Portland, Ore. That Jesuit-sponsored middle school opened for classes in 2001.

He graduated from Bellarmine Prep in San Jose, Calif., and graduated from Gonzaga Univbersity with a bachelor’s degree in English and philosophy. He entered the Jesuit novitiate in 1981 and received his Masters of Divinity degree from the Jesuit theologate in Cambridge, Mass. He also holds a master’s degree in education. He was ordained a priest in 1995.

He has taught English, drama and religion at Catholic schools in Oregon and Washington, including Gonzaga Prep, where he has taught in the English department since last January. He also served as vice principal for student life at Jesuit High School, Portland.

Father Connell replaces Kevin Booth, principal of Prep for the last two years. Booth and his family are returning to Canada.

“Father Connell brings to Gonzaga Prep 25 years of experience in the Society of Jesus, an impressive administrative background, and years of experience as a strong classroom teacher,” said Al Falkner, Prep’s president. “He understands and lives daily our Catholic, Jesuit mission and will continue to enhance the school’s traditions of academic excellence, faith formation, and service to the communities in Spokane and North Idaho. He is a remarkably talented priest and educator. We feel blessed to have him and the other Jesuits in our school community.”
