Father Bill Brennan

Thank you for the great article featuring a great priest, Father Bill Brennan (“Father Bill Brennan: 'Everywhere I went, there was song,'” IR 6/8/06). I would like to add just one piece of information on his life.

When Father Brennan was assigned as administrator and pastor of Harrington he was also the same at Odessa. It was there that I served Mass for Father and he became a friend of our family.

During the day on June 30, 1944, my father had a severe heart attack at home in Odessa. After the doctor’s visit I called Father Brennan in Harrington. His response was, “I will be right there.” He arrived at our house about 6 p.m. He heard my dad’s confession and gave him the Last Sacraments. He then told my mother that he would stay with us until the next morning, or as long as needed.

During that long night Father Brennan slept in our spare bedroom. Every hour or so he would get up and give Dad his blessing, and we would recite the rosary. My dad died at 4:30 a.m. on July 1, with Father Brennan holding one of his hands and my mother holding the other.

During the last 60 years I have come to know many great priests in our diocese, but Father Brennan will always have a very special place in my heart.
