Since 1963, Gonzaga Prep has given its highest honor, the St. Aloysius Gonzaga Medal, to a person who has given outstanding service to secondary education and to the school.

This yearís recipients are Dan and Joyce Murphy.

The Murphy Family has been associated with Gonzaga Prep since the 1920s. Danís father, John, was a graduate in the class of 1930. His brothers Mike and Tim are also Prep graduates.

Dan and Joyce have been tremendous supporters of the Spokane Catholic community. Both have worked especially hard for Catholic Charities and received the Bishopís Medal in 1986. They chaired a diocesan capital campaign for Catholic schools, helped build the new House of Charity and St. Margaret Shelter, and provided leadership and raised funds for the new St. Anne Children and Family Center.

Dan Murphy is a trustee on the Board at Seattle University, where he and Joyce have helped fund the chapel and other important causes.

The couple has raised five Prep alumni: Mark, Margie, Brian, Matt, and Dan. They have worked on several Prep committees and chaired the schoolís fund-raiser, the Great Auction. They were significant contributors to the capital campaign for the Murphy Family Library.

Currently, they are leading the Gonzaga Prep Forever campaign, that has raised almost $9 million of the $10.5 million goal. As a result, construction of the new chapel begins this summer. Prep also will finish the remodeling of the front wing of the school, build bleachers on the football/soccer field, and add almost $5 million to its endowment.
