U.S. Peace Institute sponsors high school essay contest
the Inland Register
(From the Oct. 26, 2006 edition of the Inland Register)
The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) is sponsoring an essay contest for high school students. Deadline for postmarked submissions is Feb. 1, 2007.
The competition is open to students in grades 9-12, in public or private high schools in the United States, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Territories, or student citizens studying overseas.
The topic for the 2007 National Peace Essay Contest is “Youth and Violent Conflict.” Winners will earn money for college or university studies; first-place state winners will receive $1,000 scholarships and compete nationally for awards of $10,000, $5,000, and $2,500 for first, second, and third place, respectively.
All first-place state winners are invited to attend an all-expenses-paid awards program in Washington, D.C., next June.

One of USIP’s primary goals is to strengthen peace education “of emerging generations of young people in the United States and in foreign zones of conflict by building the capacity in education institutions ... to teach about and practice peacemaking and conflict management.”
