Catholic Charities held its 21st annual Poor Man’s Meal at the House of Charity on Sunday, Oct. 1. Hosted by Bishop Skylstad, a simple meal of soup, bread, lemonade and cake was served by volunteers from Spokane Catholic schools and Fairchild Air Force Base. The event and those who participate support the House of Charity’s Emergency Winter Sleeping Program.
“Every year we see some new faces and a lot of familiar faces, the stalwart people who have always supported us over the years,” said Ed McCarron, Director of the House of Charity. “It’s a fun event.”
The House of Charity’s cook, Callie DeWitt, always offers up a delicious soup; this year it was hamburger vegetable. Each year Bill Exworthy provides lively accordion music, and local politicians attend to show their support of the program.
The House of Charity’s sleeping program provides a warm, safe bed for an average of 108 men, giving nightly shelter from the season’s harsh weather from October until April.
There is hope that, in time, the sleeping program will be open year-round, said McCarron. “I think it would stabilize everything around here,” he said.
This year the event raised over $30,000 for the shelter.
