Bishop White Seminary’s 50-year history of formation ministry was honored and remembered during events in October and November. On Oct. 28, the seminary hosted an open house, attended by some 100 people who took advantage of guided tours conducted by present members of the seminary community. Memorabilia from the seminary’s history was on view as well. Spokane’s Serra Club provided refreshments for the event.
Nov. 3 saw Mass celebrated in the student chapel of nearby Gonzaga University. Principal celebrant was Archbishop Alex J. Brunett of Seattle. Bishop William Skylstad was homilist.
Present for the Mass were bishops, abbots, deacons and their wives, and around 60 priests of the diocese and the region, as well as friends and benefactors of the seminary.
The Mass was followed by a banquet, featuring such speakers as Father Charles Skok, former Bishop White rector and Gonzaga University professor emeritus; Jesuit Father Michael Moynahan, Jesuit community rector; Yakima’s Bishop Carlos Sevilla SJ; and Dan Kuhlman, a Bishop White Alumnus, now the acting director of Moring Star Boys’ Ranch, Spokane.
An anniversary booklet was edited by Father Michael Savelesky, pastor of Assumption Parish, Spokane, and a former Bishop White rector. The booklet includes a list of 42 active diocesan priests who studied at Bishop White for one or more years, and 35 Spokane Diocese deacons, both retired and active, whose formation programs took place at Bishop White.
