Annual youth celebration continues; seeking financial support for 2007

the Inland Register

(From the Dec. 7, 2006 edition of the Inland Register)

An open letter to the people of the Diocese of Spokane:

“Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost. Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.” Luke 15:4-7

As you are aware, the Spokane Catholic Diocese has been undergoing some drastic financial changes. This means that many of the charitable and evangelical activities once supported by the diocese have been cut due to a lack of funding.

Many in the diocese are being called to carry on. Our call is to continue rebuilding our church, to strengthen from within, by nurturing the growth of our Catholic Youth.

For the past two years, after 26 years in existence, the Catholic Youth Celebration (CYC) has operated independently of diocesan funding. Thousands of youth and adults have had the opportunity of attending this three-day event. CYC runs Friday to Sunday at the end of every March. The event is planned and carried out by approximately 20 high school youth from across the diocese, and several dedicated adult volunteers. Thanks to the generosity of numerous contributors last year, CYC 2006 proved to be a huge success. With this momentum, we are committed to continue CYC without diocesan funding or personnel.

The theme chosen for the 2007 CYC is “Sinners Anonymous: The Lost and Found.” The young people of the Diocesan Youth Council (DYC) chose this theme because “every day, youth lose their way and wander from the path of Christ. Hundreds of Catholic-Christian teens from our diocese facing similar problems need to come together as a community and help each other live for God now. Lost and without faith we are dead, but found and full of God’s love we have eternal life.” The enthusiasm and dedication of the DYC give hope to those of us involved in the planning and facilitation of CYC 2007.

Our request from individuals in the community is support. The DYC, who are the youth planning the weekend, is once again in need of financial assistance to run CYC. The event requires a large amount of capital to be effective. Costs include fees for keynote speakers and workshop leaders, renting building space, and food. All financial donations by individuals or companies are kept separate from diocesan finances and will not be utilized in any way toward the diocese’s Chapter 11 Reorganization or settlements. Sponsors’ names and/or logos will be listed in all programs and on the back of our CYC T-shirts and other promotional materials.

Please prayerfully reflect on the situation at hand. The youth of our diocese are our future, and they need your help. With events such as CYC we can continue to teach our children of God’s love and compassion. Thank you in advance for your generosity. May God bless you.

Sincerely,
