Sarah Burgess, a graduate of Gonzaga University and former resident of Spokane, received her mission cross and formal assignment to Chile during a mission sending ceremony earlier this month at the Maryknoll Lay Missioners Chapel in Ossining, N.Y.
Burgess is among seven missioners, including a family with two children, departing for developing nations in Africa, Asia and Latin America in January 2007.
Before joining Maryknoll Lay Missioners, Burgess worked as a market specialist for a national food services corporation, and taught part-time at an art school.
“I see being overseas as a challenge to my spirituality,” said Burgess. “I wanted to become a member of a foreign community, to see the world through different eyes, to experience a different way of living and to challenge my fears of a future without financial stability.”
Although Burgess’ departure for Chile will be her first with a missionary organization, she has previously experienced life abroad. She spent her junior year studying in Florence, Italy, and dedicated the summer of 2004 serving in Nicaragua at a Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos orphanage.
With a Liberal Arts degree and a Music Minor from Gonzaga University, Burgess has shared her musical talents with her parish where she plays piano, flute, and cantors. Her call to activism and her spirituality have also led her to participate in and co-facilitate the Just Faith program at her parish, take a five-day silent Ignation retreat, and to be active within a women’s social justice circle.
Maryknoll Lay Missioners is a Catholic organization that works with poor communities in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and North America, making improvements in civil and human rights, and educational, economic, environmental, and healthcare development.
