Catholic Charities exceeds goal for 2006 Christmas Collection
the Inland Register
(From the Feb. 8, 2007 edition of the Inland Register)
On Jan. 16, Catholic Charities, Spokane announced that it has exceeded its 2006 Christmas Collection goal of $725,000, with a total of $767,647 received by that date.
The 2006 collection represents the highest amount ever collected in the 65-year history of the Catholic Charities Christmas Collection.
In the weeks before Christmas, the collection was down more than $160,000 from similar points in the 2005 campaign, said Dr. Robert McCann, Charities’ Executive Director. A second letter appealing donations was sent. Although the mailing was costly, “We sensed that our donors wanted more information about what was happening with their gifts,” said McCann. “Since our entire 2007 budget depends on Christmas Collection monies, we knew it was important to convey that information.”
In the days that followed the mailing, “Our generous Eastern Washington Catholic and non-Catholic community sent a massive influx of mail and donations,” said McCann.
Catholic Charities Spokane recently received a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, described as America’s largest independent charity evaluator. The rating indicates that Catholic Charities Spokane exceeds industry standards and outperforms most charities.
“This rating of ‘exceptional’ proves what most of our donors have known all along: dollars given to Catholic Charities really go to help feed, clothe, and otherwise assist those in our community who are in desperate need,” McCann said.
