Last November the seventh and eighth grade math teams from Assumption School, Walla Walla, competed in the “Math Is Cool” contest held in Moses Lake. With the eighth grade team placing first and the seventh grade team placing sixth in the Central Washington Region, both teams were invited back for the Masters contest that consists of the top teams from all over the state of Washington. At the Jan. 13 state competition, the eighth graders received a first place plaque in their division, while the seventh graders took home a fourth place plaque. Last year, the current eighth grade team placed second at state and first in regionals. Members of the eighth grade team include Art Chaiduran, Justin Meyer, Joshua Scheel, and Kincaid Schmitz. Seventh grade team members consisted of Claire Konen, Abby Larreau, Dan Soloman, and Joe Solomon. Eighth grader Art Chaiduran received a second place trophy in the Algebra Division among all algebra students in Washington State. Cathy Hamada, Assumption math teacher, coaches the teams on a weekly basis throughout the school year.
