Sister Mary Kevin Ferguson FSPA

Sister Mary Kevin Ferguson of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, died March 2 at Villa St. Joseph, La Crosse, Wis. She was 92 years old, and was in the 66th year of her Religious profession.

Sister Mary Kevin served as a primary teacher for 36 years in parochial schools in Iowa, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin, including 23 years in Spokane. After leaving the classroom, she was tutor and part-time librarian at St. Augustine School, Spokane for 11 years.

Sister Mary Kevin retired in Spokane in 1985, and began doing volunteer work with the elderly and at the House of Charity. She moved to St. Rose Convent, La Crosse, in 2002, and to Villa St. Joseph in 2003.

Sister Lucille Durocher SNJM

Holy Names Sister Lucille Durocher died March 13, 2007, in Spokane. She was 89 years old, and had been a member of her Religious community since 1936.

The funeral Mass was celebrated March 16 at the Convent of the Holy Names, Spokane.

She was born Dec. 29, 1917, in St. John, N.D. Lucille graduated from Holy Rosary Grade School and Holy Names Academy in Seattle.

Following her entry into the Sisters of the Holy Names, she earned a bachelor of science degree in education from Marylhurst College, Ore.

Her teaching career began in 1939, and included ministry in Oregon, Washington, and Mississippi. She was honored in 2002 by the Archdiocese of Seattle for her 60 years as an educator.

She planned to retire to the Convent in Spokane in 2002, thinking to spend her time gardening, but her love for tutoring led her to present herself at Tamarack Center as a volunteer. She endeared herself immediately to the staff and students, and facilitated an on-going friendship between the Convent of the Holy Names and the school. For her work at Tamarack, she was nominated as Spokane Volunteer of the Year in 2005.
