St. Vincent de Paul, Spokane, publishes annual report
by Mitch Finley, Inland Register staff
(From the April 12, 2007 edition of the Inland Register)
Spokane’s St. Vincent de Paul Society has published its annual report for 2005-2006.
For about a year now, Adrienne Brownlow has been Executive Director of the Spokane St. Vincent de Paul. She summarized some of the report’s highlights.
“The Spokane District Council of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul served 86,525 people within the Spokane County area, 48,000 with emergency food assistance.” she said. “More than $2 million dollars of emergency food was distributed throughout the Diocese of Spokane,” which consists of the 13 counties of Eastern Washington. “Another 135,343 people were provided emergency assistance, primarily in Dayton, Walla Walla and Pasco,” she said.
The annual report also states that the Society carried out a total of 3, 116 visits to homes, prisons, hospitals, and other sites. Other services were carried out on behalf of more than 4,000 people.
More than 125,000 people received help in the form of food, furniture, and clothing, for a total value of $1,426, 771.00.
The St. Vincent de Paul Society first came to the United States in 1833, Brownlow said.
“The first parish conference of the Society was aggregated at the Cathedrdal of Our Lady of Lourdes in 1896. The headquarters for the Spokane District Council of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul has been located at 2901 E. Trent Ave. in Spokane since the early 1950s.” That will soon change, she said; after more than 60 years at the Trent site, the Society will relocate its headquarters and retail shops in June of this year.
Brownlow said that the mission of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul has remained unchanged through the years: “It is to serve the poor and the hungry, and to serve others as if Christ himself.”
