Bishop Skylstad recently announced the assignment of Father Cyprien Niyitegeka as parochial vicar at St. Augustine Parish in Spokane, effective Aug. 15.
Father Niyitegeka (right), a native of Rwanda, was born Aug. 25, 1966. He was ordained in Rwanda in July, 2000, and he has been a student at Gonzaga University, living at Bishop White Seminary for the past two years and serving as a spiritual director for the seminarians. He recently finished a Master of Arts degree in Spirituality.
In late June, Father Niyitegeka approached Bishop Skylstad about the possibility of becoming a priest of the Diocese of Spokane. Bishop Sklystad contacted Father Niyitegeka’s bishop in Rwanda, and the latter was willing to release Father Niyitegeka for service in the Diocese of Spokane.
The eldest from a family of nine children, Father Niyitigeka has four brothers and four sisters – and there are two sets of twins among his siblings. “I come from a very Catholic family,” Father Niyitigeka said.
Father Niyitigeka said that he is looking forward to his new ministry at St. Augustine Parish. “In particular, I enjoy preaching,” he said. “But I am looking forward to all of my ministry at St. Augustine.”
Father Niyitigeka will continue to live at Bishop White Seminary, and he will continue to serve as a spiritual director for the seminarians, in addition to his duties at St. Augustine Parish.
