the Inland Register
(From the Oct. 4, 2007 edition of the Inland Register)
The Clothing Closet, a new service offered by Catholic Detention Ministries, will debut Friday, Oct. 19, at Pine Lodge Correction Center for Women, Medical Lake.
The program provides women leaving prison with two outfits, shoes, coat, purse, hygiene pack, and duffel bag to carry out as they begin their new lives.
According to Providence Sister Myrta Iturriaga, coordinator of Catholic Detention Ministry for the diocese, “The Clothing Closet” has “a desperate need” for a number of items, including:
Duffel bags – overnight or weekender size
Full sizes of the following: shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, facial cleanser, body wash, soap, body lotion, brushes/combs, toothbrushes, toothpaste
Also needed: Dental floss, feminine hygiene products (napkins and tampons), gallon-size zip lock bags.
In clothing, the ministry needs new underpants in all sizes, new bras in all sizes, new socks, gently used clothing (pants, jeans, knit tops, easy care blouses, sweaters, coats, jackets, etc.), gently used shoes, sneakers, work boots, boots, etc.
Plastic hangers, purses, wallets, watches, and accessories such as hats, gloves, scarves, belts, and so on are helpful as well.
Cash donations are always accepted as well. Contact Sister Myrta: P.O. Box 1453, Spokane, WA 99210-1453, or call (509) 358-7314.
