Poor Man's Meal

the Inland Register

(From the Oct. 25, 2007 edition of the Inland Register)

Gathering support to supply homeless men with a warm, safe place to sleep year-round is the goal of the Bishopís Poor Manís Meal, held each October at the House of Charity in downtown Spokane. This yearís event took place Oct. 7, Respect Life Sunday, hosted by Bishop William Skylstad and Spokane Mayor Dennis Hession. The dinner is a crucial source of funds, since the homeless shelter is now open year-round, providing beds for an average of 107 men each night. The Poor Manís Meal also provides an opportunity to gather with others who care for those who are less fortunate. Accordion player Bill Exworthy provided spirited music, and Jesuit and Americorps Volunteers gave tours of the facility. Students from Gonzaga Prep, St. Joseph Parish in Otis Orchards, and military personnel from Fairchild Air Force Base decorated the dining room and were willing and gracious servers. Special appreciation was expressed to the many local restaurants and grocery stores that have provided food for the House of Charity over the years, including Rosauers, Safeway, Peirones, Bannum Place, Starbuckís Coffee, Longhorn Restaurant, Cravenís Coffee, Dickís Hamburgers, and Costco. Nearly $30,000 has been raised to continue Catholic Charitiesí mission of providing those who have no homes with a secure place to sleep each night.
