Successful gardening

the Inland Register

(From the Dec. 20, 2007 edition of the Inland Register)

The St. Margaret Shelter garden in Vinegar Flats garden was chosen to be the benefactor of the KPMG Community Matters service project this fall. The volunteers at KPMG joined with service learning students at Gonzaga University to offer not only their time and help, but also the purchase of an item from the St. Margaret’s wish list (which includes everything from new spading forks to a greenhouse) for the garden. The project took place on the weekend of Oct. 12 and was, according to Jody Nelson, Volunteer Coordinator for St. Margaret, “an amazing success.” Over 30 people participated, which meant those involved were able to make three compost bins, double the size of the garden with new fencing and posts, and add metal flashing around the exterior of the garden, “all while having a great time,” said Nelson.
