Gavin Group audit finds Spokane Diocese in compliance with bishops’ Charter
by Deacon Eric Meisfjord, Editor, Inland Register
(From the Jan. 17, 2008 edition of the Inland Register)
The recent audit of the Spokane Diocese by The Gavin Group, a firm consisting mainly of former FBI agents, has found the diocese to be in compliance with the requirements of the U.S. bishops’ Charter for the Protection of Children and Young Adults.
The full audit was conducted late last year in a visitation by representatives of The Gavin Group.
According to Mary Butler, the diocese’s retiring Victims’ Assistance Coordinator, the audit examined Safe Environment protocols, such as hiring policies, background checks, training for employees and volunteers, reporting abuse, and so on.
Butler credited the successful audit to the combined effort of several individuals, functioning as a team to assure the safety of children in the diocese, particularly Dr. Duane Schafer and Jackie Martin of the diocese’s Office of Education, and Bruce Bennett of the Paine-Hamblen law firm.
