PORTLAND – Mary Sue Richen, longtime pastoral minister at the Maybelle Clark Macdonald Center in downtown Portland, has stepped down to take on other endeavors. Her brother, Holy Cross Father Richard Berg, earlier retired from his post as executive director of the care residence and urban ministry headquarters.
Father Berg had founded the institution and had managed it since the early 1990s, offering assisted living to low-income people and sending volunteers out to visit residents of low-cost hotels. The idea was that isolation causes a breakdown in mental and physical health.
“The two of them, brother and sister, are taking with them a lot of history and accomplishment,” said Ed Mosey, who has served on the board of the center. Mosey calls Richen “the heart and soul of the center, providing gentle, loving support to hundreds of street people and residents of downtown hotel/apartments over the years.” Father Berg, said Mosey, is a visionary and a “financial whiz” who has been able to raise millions for the ministry.
