Diocesan Schools Superintendent is WFIS Distinguished Administrator
by Mitch Finley, Inland Register staff
(From the Feb. 28, 2008 edition of the Inland Register)
Diocesan Superintendent of Catholic Schools Dr. Duane Shafer was among 17 individuals from independent schools honored recently at the annual Winter Dinner of the Washington Federation of Independent Schools (WFIS). On Tuesday evening, Feb. 12, at the Museum of Flight, in Seattle, these leaders, teachers and parents received WFIS 2008 Best of Washington Awards.
Dr. Shafer received the 2008 award for Outstanding Administrator. He was nominated by the principals of the Diocese of Spokane’s Catholic schools, specifically for his outstanding leadership, vision and desire for collaboration.
“We begin the nomination process each year in October,” said Jan Morrison, assistant to the director of WFIS. “The WFIS board of directors makes the final determination based on the nominations received, and each person who was honored received an attractive acrylic award.”
Bishop William Skylstad said: “On behalf of all of us in the diocese, we congratulate Dr. Duane Shafter on this 2008 Distinguished Administrator award from WFIS. For years, as our diocesan superintendent of Catholic Schools, he has demonstrated remarkable wisdom, dedication, and selfless commitment to the cause of Catholic education. We have truly been blessed by his service to our Church here in Eastern Washington.”
