Chess Club Plays at St. Anne Children and Family Center
the Inland Register
(From the May 1, 2008 edition of the Inland Register)
What do tournament chess, St. Anne Children and Family Center, and the House of Charity have in common? That question was answered on Feb. 23, when the Spokane Chess Club held its 16th annual tournament David Collyer Memorial Chess Tournament in the lower level of St. Anne. This year’s tournament was the largest registration in the history of the event, with three International Masters in attendance. The tournament has been played elsewhere in years past, but this year it occurred to a chess-playing Catholic Charities employee that a win-win situation was at hand. The chess club offered to rent a level of the building for the one-day tournament, but Dr. Rob McCann, Catholic Charities Executive Director, suggested that what he’d really like would be donations of pajamas and socks for the men at the House of Charity, and Kevin Korsmo, president of the chess club, agreed. “It was fun to have the chess club in this facility, which is ideal for group gatherings,” said Dr. McCann. “It makes sense to have the building used by responsible groups on evenings and weekends. The kitchen is commercially certified, and a band could even play there.” He said that he loves the idea of groups making a connection or donation to one of Catholic Charities’ 15 programs.
