Catholic singles organize for social, spiritual, service opportunities
by Mitch Finley, Inland Register staff
(From the Aug. 21, 2008 edition of the Inland Register)
Not long ago, a group for single Catholics under age 35 was revived in Spokane and began scheduling activities. (For information on this group contact Father Victor Blazovich, (509) 487-1325.) More than a few Catholic singles are over age 35, however, and Patrick Kirlin, of St. Joseph Parish in Otis Orchards, decided to do something about it. So in July he established the Catholic Active Singles Group. The new group is sponsored by Spokane’s St. Aloysius Parish but is open to all Catholic singles over age 35.
“The group will be involved with social, spiritual and service activities,” Patrick Kirlin explained. “So far, social activities have been planned such as dinners and boat cruises, and other activities are in the works. Faith sharing and/or Bible studies have been mentioned for the spiritual activities, as well as attending Mass at various parishes. Service activities will include community service projects, as well as pro-life events.”
Shannon Snover, of Spokane’s St. Aloysius Parish, is helping to organize the new singles group. “My thought was, Why isn’t there a singles group within the church [for those over age 35]? So I started working with Patrick (Kirlin). . . I would hope the group would be a place where single Catholics can meet in a non-threatening atmosphere for singles who are interested in meeting a member of the opposite sex that they might fall in love with and marry. I (also) hope the group will be a place a single can go and attend social activities, as well as spiritual, allowing them to meet new faces and see new places. . .”
