Four priests receive pastoral assignments this autumn

Four priests of the Spokane Diocese begin new pastoral assignments within the month.

Father Fernando Maldonado has been named parochial vicar of St. Patrick Parish, Pasco, effective Sept. 15.

The other three appointments are effective Sept. 1:

Father Miguel Mejia is the new parochial vicar of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, Spokane. In addition, Father Mejia will serve as administrator of the parishes in Rosalia, Oakesdale, St. John, and Tekoa.

Father Vincent Van Dao has been named parochial vicar of St. Patrick Parish, Walla Walla.

Father Alejandro Zepeda will become pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish, Oroville, and Holy Rosary Parish, Tonasket.

Father Maldonado was ordained to the priesthood June 29, 1999.

He comes to Eastern Washington from Mexico. He also served three years as a member of the Holy Family Religious order in Spain before he began his priestly formation for the Spokane Diocese.

Father Maldonado attended Bishop White Seminary and St. Paul Seminary in St. Paul, Minn.

He first served as parochial vicar of St. Patrick Parish, Walla Walla. He was named pastor of the parishes in Pomeroy, Dayton, and Waitsburg in 2000. After a leave of absence, he returned to the diocese as parochial vicar of Sacred Heart Parish, Othello.

In 2003 he was named pastor of the parishes in Oroville and Tonasket, and in February 2007 became pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, Othello.

Father Mejia also comes to the Spokane Diocese from Mexico.

He was ordained to the priesthood on Aug. 11, 2000, after studies at Bishop White Seminary and The Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium, where he specialized in moral theology.

He served as parochial vicar of St. Patrick Parish, Pasco, from ordination until 2002, when he became pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, Othello.

Father Van Dao is a former member of the Fraternity of the Virgin Mary of the Poor. A native of Vietnam, he taught high school physics as well as computer science.

He studied theology at Bayonne Seminary, France, for five years, before leaving his Religious community and coming to study for the Spokane Diocese.

After completing courses in English at Gonzaga University, he attended Mount Angel Seminary, St. Benedict, Ore., for the rest of his priestly formation.

He has been parochial vicar for the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, Spokane, and continued in that ministry after being named administrator of the parishes in Rosalia, St. John, and Oakesdale in 2007.

Father Zepeda was ordained to the priesthood July 7, 2006.

He is a native of San Mateo Atenco, Mexico. He studied at Gonzaga Univrsity and The American College in Louvain, Belgium.

He has served as parochial vicar of St. Patrick and St. Francis of Assisi parishes in Walla Walla, and at St. Patrick Parish, Pasco.
