(From the Sept. 11, 2008 edition of the Inland Register)

Sixth graders wait for the start of school on the first day at St. Mary School, Spokane Valley. All of the students will be in teacher Paul Kennarís sixth grade class this year. In front, from left, are Patrick Hammersley, Austin Roberts, Lauren Campanella, Cassie Fielding, Audrey Kennar, and Emily Sitter-Schwartze. In back are Conor McLean and Bella Schwietert. St. Mary School celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The school opened Sept. 2, 1958, with 114 students in grades one-four. The school was built by parishioners who donated over 6,000 hours of labor. Each year one new classroom was added so that students could attend until eighth grade. This year St. Mary opened with 261 students from age 3 to eighth grade. (IR photo courtesy of St. Mary School, Spokane Valley)
