Holy Names Sister Magdalen Mary Payton died Sept. 17 in Spokane at the age of 96. The funeral Mass was celebrated the morning of Sept. 23 at the Convent of the Holy Names in Spokane.
She was born in North Dakota, where her family operated a wheat ranch until they moved to Spokane and joined St. Patrick Parish. She graduated from Holy Names Academy and entered the Holy Names novitiate in 1930, when she began to study for her bachelorís degree in English.
She taught for some 52 years in secondary schools in Washington and Oregon, as well as 18 years at Fort Wright College of the Holy Names in Spokane. She continued to serve in the Reading Room at Holy Names Center until her full retirement in 2002.
She put her masterís degree in Spanish to good use when she received a grant to study in Quito, Ecuador, for a year. She also studied in Madrid, Spain; Cuernavaca, Mexico; and the University of Salamanca. Fort Wright awarded her its Distinguished Teacher Award in 1981.
