New assignments announced for 11 priests

New pastoral assignments have been announced for 11 priests, effective in June and August of this year.

Father Joe Bell, pastor of St. Peter Parish, Spokane, is the new pastor of St. John Vianney Parish, Spokane Valley, effective June 1.

Benedictine Father Michael (Brian) Mee has returned to the Spokane Diocese as the new pastor of St. Peter Parish, effective June 1.

Father Vincent Van Dao, parochial vicar of St. Patrick and St. Francis of Assisi parishes, Walla Walla, has been named pastor of the parishes in Chewelah, Valley, and Springdale, and the mission at Jump Off Joe, effective June 1.

Father José Jaime Maldonado, pastor of the Chewelah, Valley, and Springdale parishes, will become parochial vicar of St. Patrick and St. Francis of Assisi parishes, Walla Walla, on June 1.

Father Lucas Tomson, parochial vicar of Assumption Parish, Walla Walla, and teacher at DeSales High School, becomes the new parochial vicar of Assumption Parish, Spokane, on Aug. 1.

Father Matthew Nicks is the new parochial vicar of St. Patrick Parish, Pasco, effective Aug. 1.

Three deacons who will be ordained to the priesthood June 26 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes begin their first assignments as priests, serving as parochial vicars, beginning Aug. 1.

Deacon Kevin Oiland, who will be ordained to the priesthood June 26, has been assigned as parochial vicar of St. Patrick and St. Francis of Assisi parishes in Walla Walla. In addition, he will serve as chaplain/teacher at DeSales High School, Walla Walla.

Deacon David Kuttner will be parochial vicar of St. Thomas More Parish, Spokane.

Deacon Matthew Larsen will become the parochial vicar of St. Mary Parish, Spokane Valley.

Two priests will be on leave, to serve as chaplains in the Armed Forces.

Father Richard Poole, pastor of St. John Vianney, Spokane Valley, is on leave to serve as a chaplain in the U.S. Air Force, effective June 1.

Father James Peak, parochial vicar of St. Thomas More Parish, Spokane, is on leave to serve as a chaplain in the U.S. Army, effective Aug. 1.

Father Bell was ordained to the priesthood June 27, 1974, after studies at Mater Cleri Seminary, Bishop White Seminary, and North American College, Rome.

He has been an associate pastor at St. Augustine Parish, Spokane, St. Mary Parish, Spokane Valley, and St. Thomas More Parish, Spokane. In 1981 he was named pastor of the parishes in Brewster and Twisp, followed by 11 years as pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, Spokane.

He served as pastor of Assumption Parish, Spokane, from 1994-2001, when he was named pastor of St. Peter, Spokane.

Father Michael (Brian) Mee OSB was ordained a priest for the Spokane Diocese on July 8, 1978. He studied at Mater Cleri and Bishop White Seminaries, and North American College, Rome, prior to ordination.

His first assignment as a priest was to serve at St. Patrick Parish, Walla Walla, as assistant pastor. He moved to Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Spokane, as associate pastor in 1980, and in 1983 accepted an assignment to the Spokane Diocese’s mission in Guatemala.

He joined the Benedictine monastic community at Mount Angel in 1989 and served in a number of roles there, including time as a seminary spiritual director.

Father Vincent Van Dao was ordained a priest of the Spokane Diocese on Dec. 21, 2005, after studies at Bishop White Seminary and Mount Angel Seminary, St. Benedict, Ore.

Originally from Vietnam, Father Van Dao studied theology in France and taught high school physics and computer science as a member of the Fraternity of the Virgin Mary of the Poor.

While in residence at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, he served as administrator of the parishes in Rosalia, St. John, Oakes-dale, and Tekoa, before being named parochial vicar of St. Patrick Parish, Walla Walla, last October.

Father José Jaime Maldonado, the new parochial vicar for St. Patrick and St. Francis of Assisi parishes in Walla Walla, was ordained May 24, 2002.

He completed a degree in philosophy from Seminario de Monterrey, Mexico, before studying at Bishop White Seminary, Spokane, and completing priestly formation at Mount Angel Seminary in Oregon.

He was parochial vicar of St. Patrick Parish, Pasco, for three years before becoming pastor of the parishes in Brewster and Twisp in 2005. He was named pastor of the parishes in Chewelah, Springdale, and Valley last July.

Father Lucas Tomson was ordained June 29, 2007, after studying at Bishop White Seminary and North American College, Rome. He has served the Walla Walla Catholic community since December 2007 as parochial vicar of Assumption Parish and teacher at DeSales High School.

Father Matt Nicks returned to the diocese this year after completing additional theological studies in Rome. He was ordained a priest June 27, 2008.

He spent a year as a deacon ministering at Assumption Parish, Spokane, before completing his priestly formation studies.

Deacon Kevin Oiland will be ordained to the priesthood June 26. He recently completed theology studies at Mount Angel Seminary, St. Benedict, Ore. He also studied at Bishop White Seminary, and spent a pastoral year at St. Augustine Parish, Spokane.

Deacon David Kuttner has been studying at North American College, Rome. He also studied at Bishop White Seminary, Spokane. Before entering the priestly formation program, Deacon Kuttner was a teacher and coach.

Deacon Matthew Larsen was an attorney, working as a public defender, before entering the program at Bishop White Seminary. He has been focusing on Canon Law during his theology studies at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

Father Richard Poole was ordained a priest on June 23, 1994, after studying at Bishop White Seminary and St. Paul Seminary, St. Paul, Minn.

He was parochial vicar of St. Patrick Parish, Pasco, before being named pastor of the parishes in Connell and Eltopia in 1995. In addition to that assignment, he was made administrator of St. Agnes Parish, Ritzville, in 2005.

He moved to St. John Vianney Parish, Spokane Valley, as pastor in 2006.

Father James Peak was ordained a priest on June 29, 2007.

A major in the Army Reserves, Father Peak studied at Gonzaga University, Bishop White Seminary, and North American College, Rome.

He has been parochial vicar of St. Thomas More Parish, Spokane, since priestly ordination.
