the Inland Register
(From the April 30, 2009 edition of the Inland Register)
The Knowledge Bowl team from DeSales High School, Walla Walla, began its spring break by taking first place at the Washington State Knowledge Bowl Tournament at West Valley High School in Spokane Saturday, March 28. This was DeSalesís first time to take the top spot at State and only the third time the number one trophy would leave Spokane in the 27 years of the State Tournament history. Besting St. Georgeís and Valley Christian, both of Spokane, in the championship round, the DeSales team was thrilled to take home the first place trophy.
DeSales took first place in the regional meet at Waitsburg on March 2 to earn the chance to compete at State after an undefeated season in league competition. At Saturdayís meet, DeSales was number one in its nine-team division after a written test and four oral rounds of questions, then won its semifinal round against Northwest Christian (from Lacey) and Oroville, advancing to the championship round.
The DeSales team consists of Captain Peter Wostenberg, a senior, and fellow seniors Beth Notturno and Hannah Wentz. Sophomores Art Chaidarun, Kincaid Schmitz and Peter Vander Griend complete the team, which is coached by Kathy Ruthven. Peter Wostenberg, Beth Notturno, Hannah Wentz and Coach Kathy Ruthven are also members of Assumption Parish in Walla Walla, and Kincaid Schmitz is a member of St. Patrick Parish in Walla Walla.
