New deacon for Spokane Diocese

the Inland Register

(From the April 30, 2009 edition of the Inland Register)

Bishop Michael Jarrell of Lafayette, La., ordained Lutakome “Luta” Deo Nsubuga to the diaconate for the Diocese of Spokane on Saturday, April 18, at the National Shrine of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. Spokane Seminarian Kris Leistritz was the thurifer for the Mass, Jeff Lewis played trumpet, Tyler Smedley sang in the schola, Deacon Matthew Larsen was the deacon for the Mass, and Jeff Core planned the formal reception following the liturgy. Luta was born and raised in Uganda. He came to the United States and earned his undergraduate degree from Washington State University. While he was in Pullman he was quite involved with liturgies and retreats at the Newman Center. After graduation, Luta turned down a prestigious offer to study pharmacy on the graduate level so that he could further discern his vocation to the priesthood. Luta transferred to Bishop White Seminary and Gonzaga University and is currently completing his third year of seminary at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Luta is fluent in Spanish and has spent time during summers ministering to the people of Oroville, Tonasket and Pasco. He is scheduled to be ordained a priest in May of 2010.
