St. Patrick Parish, Walla Walla, celebrates 150 Years

by Mitch Finley, Inland Register staff

(From the June 11, 2009 edition of the Inland Register)

On Sunday, May 24, at 4 p.m., Walla Walla’s St. Patrick Parish held the main celebration of its 150 years of existence. Bishop William Skylstad joined pastor Father Patrick Kerst in leading the community in a prayer service and re-dedication of the parish and its ministries.

The Knights of Columbus Honor Guard and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Honor Guard welcomed some 300 people from all three Walla Walla parishes, plus former pastors and parochial vicars, directors of religious education, teachers who served in the old St. Patrick School, and other staff from the parish’s past.

In the church the seven sacramental “stations” were blessed, that is, the baptismal pool, the altar, the reconciliation room, and so on. From the church the assembly joined in song for a procession to the parish office building and the catechetical and social gathering buildings, which were also re-dedicated and blessed together with the ministries which take place in these facilities.

After a concluding blessing in the gym, those in attendance shared a dinner.
