Eastern Washington parishes maintain support for Guatemala Mission programs
by Jerry Monks, for the Inland Register
(From the July 30, 2009 edition of the Inland Register)
Spokane Diocese parishes that have helped in the past continued their support of Guatemala Mission programs during the 2008-09 fiscal year that ended June 30.
In addition, two parishes initiated programs of assistance to the poor in Guatemala.
• St. Joseph, Colbert, provided much needed funds for School and Youth activities in Ixtahuacán.
The parish support ($54,830), plus other individual and unrestricted donations of $5,149, resulted in total income of $59,979. That was very close to the budgeted amount of $60,000 for the 2008-09 fiscal year. In addition, Our Lady of Fatima and St. Thomas More parishes in Spokane have individual programs that augment the diocesan programs shown below.
Some of the individual donations were directed to specific categories, such as health programs. Unrestricted donations, including a one-time gift of $1,000 gift from the Ficolora Foundation, were used to help meet shortfalls in categories that lacked sufficient income to cover the budgeted expenses.
The largest shortfalls were in the funds budgeted for the Catholic school in Nahualá, the Marian Center in Ixtahuacán, and the radio station in Nahualá. A savings in the amount held for emergency and travel also helped to offset those deficits.
The total diocese budget for 2009-10 will be comparable to 2008-09, with some minor adjustments. Additional parish support will be needed in some programs, such as those assisting the seminarians in Sololá and for operation of the Marian Center in Ixtahuacán.
Parishes and their contributions:
• Assumption, Spokane: $2,000 for seminarians; $3,000 for compensation for the Sisters.
