Centennial Mass in Newport

the Inland Register

(From the Aug. 20, 2009 edition of the Inland Register)

St. Anthony Parish, Newport, celebrated its centennial July 12 with a program and Mass. The Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Church, sang hymns before and during Mass. The Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree Honor Guard led the entrance procession. Concelebrating the Mass were (from left) Jesuit Father Bernard Coughlin, retired president and current chancellor of Gonzaga University; Bishop William Skylstad; and Father Joseph Sullivan, pastor of St. Anthony and the other Catholic parishes of Pend Oreille County. Deacon Bill Sando (right), who served St. Anthony before his retirement, also joined the celebration. After the Mass, a centennial plaque was blessed, which will be displayed in the church, followed by a barbecue for more than 200 guests. (IR photo courtesy of Dennis and Cindy Merritt)
