Rest in Peace: Deacon Rod Popiel
the Inland Register
(From the Sept. 10, 2009 edition of the Inland Register)
Deacon Rod Popiel, ordained for the Diocese of Spokane on June 24, 2009, died Sept. 4 after a long illness. He was 63 years old.
The vigil will be held Friday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 219 E. Rockwood Blvd. in Spokane. The funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, Sept. 12, at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, 1115 W. Riverside Ave. in Spokane. Burial will be that afternoon, at 2 p.m., at Mary Queen of Peace Cemetery at Immaculate Heart Retreat Center, 6910 S. Ben Burr Rd., Spokane.
“On the occasion of Deacon Rod Popiel’s death, we can reflect on his journey these last few months as one of deep faith and patient endurance,” said Bishop Skylstad. “Rod was deeply committed to his faith, his wife and family, and the Church as a deason. The slow advance of cancer in his body was accompanied by a trust in God and a calmness expressing a humble submission to human limitation caused by the disease.
“I would like to express to his wife, Arlette, and the family our prayerful sympathy on the occasion of his death,” said the bishop. “I am also profoundly grateful for his diaconal minitry. May he rest in peace.”
Deacon Rod and his wife, Arlette, were married May 4, 1968.
For many years Deacon Popiel was National Training Manager and Senior District Sales Representative for Ace Hardware’s paint division. After ordination he ministered at Sacred Heart Parish, Spokane.
He is survived by his wife, Arlette; two daughters, Cindy (Spokane) and Jennifer (St. Louis, Mo.); and seven grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Spokane or Immaculate Heart Retreat Center.
