Caroline Romano, Chelsea Thronson, and Sarah Means giggled when they heard the final word in the “Spokane is Spelling” student spelling bee. The three Cataldo School students had just practiced the word at lunch before the competition. After a brief huddle, Romano spelled privilege and Cataldo’s Queen Bees were declared champions. The sixth graders also correctly spelled such words as echelon, accustomed, and eccentricity to beat out 30 other fifth and sixth grade teams for the title. Former Cataldo teacher Diane Wells worked with the girls the past two months. “I was confident the girls would do well,” Wells said. “I’m thrilled with the results. They’re really smart, sweet, and talented girls.” From left: Diane Wells, Sarah Means, Caroline Romano, and Chelsea Thronson. (IR photo courtesy of Cataldo School, Spokane)
