PORTLAND – A parish dining hall that has become something of a safe haven for the homeless and poor got an unexpected, and unwelcome, visit from Portland police accompanied by a production crew from the COPS TV show.
Without advance notice, the police and crew burst into the dining hall at St. Francis Parish to film a segment about the officers searching for a homicide suspect. Diners were upset by the media invasion, many of them yelling and covering their faces.
“People thought we were in on it,” said Valerie Chapman, pastoral administrator of St. Francis. “It’s been really hard.” She was surprised that officers led the COPS crew to the parish without any warning to parish staff.
ST. BENEDICT – The Benedictine monks of Mount Angel Abbey will meet this month to elect their 11th abbot.
Abbot Nathan Zodrow, originally from Eastern Washington, resigned earlier this year.
Electing the new abbot will be those monks who have made solemn vows. Eligible for office are those members of the community who are priests, perpetually professed for at least five years, and at least 35 years of age. The monks use a secret ballot system for the election.
