Sister Mary Janett of the Sisters of the Holy Names died Nov. 16 in Spokane. She was 92 years old.
The funeral Mass was celebrated Nov. 18 at the Convent of the Holy Names, Spokane. Interment was at Holy Cross Cemetery.
She was born in Davenport, Wash., Aug. 5, 1917. She attended the Davenport Public School until seventh grade, when her mother enrolled her at Holy Names Academy in Spokane, where she graduated in 1939.
She entered Religious life in 1941 and in 1943 began a teaching career that lasted 45 years, from pre-school classrooms to college instruction, mostly in the Spokane area.
She was a member of the Education Department at Fort Wright College of the Holy Names, principal of the Early Childhood Center there, and then taught at the Spokane campus of Heritage University.
In time she earned two master’s degrees in education, one in counseling and guidance from Gonzaga University, and a second in educational media from Eastern Washington University, Cheney.
Although she retired in 1989, she remained active, driving other Sisters to appointments, visiting the Care Center, gardening, and creating ceramic art, music, and wonderful food, especially as a baker.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Names Retirement Fund, 2911 W. Fort Wright Dr., Spokane, WA 99224.
