On Saturday, April 10, Bishop William Skylstad ordained five deacons in the Crypt Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. All five men are candidates for the priesthood; four are studying for the Diocese of Spokane.
Bishop Skylstad was invited to be the ordaining bishop by Father Mel Blanchette, rector of Theological College at the Catholic University of America. Several priests, deacons and seminarians from the Diocese of Spokane attended, including Msgr. Robert Pearson; Fathers Darrin Connall (Director of Vocations and rector of Bishop White Seminary), Dan Barnett, Rory Pitstick, Kevin Oiland, Matthew Larsen, Eugene Tracy, and Paul Vevik; Deacons Luta Nsubuga and John Ruscheinksy; and seminarians Kyle Ratuiste, Dale Tuckerman, David Gaines, and Kris Leistritz.
A formal banquet was held at the seminary for the Spokane contingent on the evening prior to the ordinations.
Spokane Deacons Jeff Core, Jeff Lewis, Jason Hiner, and Tyler Smedley are all completing their third year of theological studies. Deacon Core will be assigned this summer to St. Patrick Parish in Pasco for pastoral work, preaching, and sacramental ministry.
Deacon Lewis is in charge of organizing and implementing this summer’s “Quo Vadis” vocation retreat for the Spokane Diocese. After the retreat, Deacon Lewis will be assigned to St. Patrick in Walla Walla for pastoral ministry.
Deacon Smedley will be assigned to the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes for the summer months.
Deacon Hiner will be traveling to Mexico for a summer session of Spanish language and culture studies.
All four Spokane deacons are on track to be ordained priests on May 27, 2011 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes.
