Summer is almost upon us, and that means Spokaneís third annual Quo Vadis Days (QVD) is right around the corner. QVD is our four-day vocations retreat camp for boys ages 13-19 to discern their possible call to the priesthood and to learn more about the priesthood and seminary life in general. I have been blessed with the privilege to organize QVD this summer, and my promotion work for vocations and QVD has taken me all over the diocese these past two weeks visiting our parochial schools during the week and parishes on the weekends.
QVD 2010 begins this summer on Tuesday, July 6, and ends on Friday, July 9. This year, we will host QVD at the Immaculate Heart Retreat Center. If you are unfamiliar with QVD, camp activities include Mass each day, Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer of the Liturgy of the Hours each day, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament each night, and conference talks given by various priests of the Diocese of Spokane. Talks cover a wide array of subjects pertaining to vocations, discernment, prayer and spirituality, and other related topics.
And of course, there is plenty of time for recreation: frisbee, soccer, volleyball, and other sports and games.
Camp staff consists of Spokane Diocese seminarians, working with this yearís camp chaplain, Father Matthew Nicks, parochial vicar at St. Patrick Parish, Pasco.
This summerís QVD will be particularly special. This summer marks the end of Pope Benedictís Year for Priests. Part of the yearís emphasis has been to encourage all of us to learn more about and grow in appreciation of the nature of the priesthood . Additionally, this will be the last QVD with Bishop Skylstad, who again will celebrate QVDís closing Mass. Our bishop has been an incredible source of encouragement and support in our vocation promotion efforts these past many years, and we simply cannot thank him enough for his leadership and guidance.
Registration for QVD 2010 has already begun. Two years ago, our first QVD experience in Spokane, we had over 30 boys come to camp. Last year, we had just over 50. This year, we have space available for 70. Register before we run out of space!
