Pullman Pentecost celebration

the Inland Register

(From the July 1, 2010 edition of the Inland Register)

On Sunday, May 23, Sacred Heart Parish, Pullman, came together as one large community by celebrating Mass for the entire parish outdoors in Reaney Park.Father José Millan, pastor, led the congregation with a moving liturgy that highlighted the meaning of Pentecost. The first and second readings, as well as the Prayers of the Faithful, each were proclaimed in different languages. Several different musical groups from the parish added to the liturgical celebration by singing in different languages as well. Though not everyone could understand what was being said, Father tied everything together with his homily, emphasizing that differences come together to unify and strengthen the church. He also called attention to the fact that Pentecost is the birthday of the church and that our outdoor celebration was a fitting way to mark the church’s birthday. Following Mass, the Knights of Columbus grilled hot dogs and hamburgers for the parish. Side dishes and desserts were supplied by the parishioners, along with condiments and drinks from the Catholic Daughters. The Religious Education team led games for young and old alike and the Social Justice ministry assured good environmental stewardship by providing recycling stations for the event. High school seniors were blessed and two – Katie Guettinger and Leah Watts – were presented with scholarships of $500 each from the youth minister, Miranda Harpel-McGraw. The scholarships were a combined effort of Knights of Columbus, Catholic Daughters, Religious Education, and generous members of the parish. The presence of the Holy Spirit could definitely be felt at Sacred Heart on this special day. (IR photo courtesy of Theresa Paul)
