IHRC offers women’s healing retreat; catechetical evenings continue
by Deacon Eric Meisfjord, Editor, Inland Register
(From the Aug. 19, 2010 edition of the Inland Register)
Immaculate Heart Retreat Center (IHRC), 6910 S. Ben Burr Rd. in Spokane, hosts a women’s healing retreat, “Restoring Hope” Friday-Sunday, Sept. 10-12.
Thea Loughery and Sarah Compton of Elijah House Ministries are the presenters.
The combination of the sacraments and Scriptural keys for healing enable participants to take part in a gentle but vigorous renewal that promotes real growth. This retreat offers spiritual and emotional healing for all women of any walk of life, hope for the weary, the broken and the hurting.
The cost of the retreat is $170 or $100 for commuters.
• IHRC hosts a Day of Prayer on Wednesday, Sept. 15, from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m., with Dr. Catherine Tkacz of Gonzaga University, titled “Women as Types of Christ: Traditions of the Church Fathers.”
Topics will include Typology in the Old and New Testaments and Women as Types of Christ, identifying eight women from Scripture.
The people of the Old Testament learned that God communicated with them not only through prophecy in words, but also through certain people, events and things in which God had put an imprint, or type, of himself that would help them recognize the Messiah when he came. Jesus continued this use by indicating that he himself fulfilled those types, which began to include women and Gentiles, and served to remind the faithful that the individual human person is called to be Christlike and holy.
Dr. Catherine Tkacz has lectured at Oxford and is a Blackfriars Special Lecturer.
The cost of the Day of Prayer is $30 with a schedule of rosary, conferences with a question and answer period, and time for reflection, confessions, lunch and Mass.
• Another Day of Prayer has been scheduled for on Saturday, Oct. 2, 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m., with Father Rory Pitstick.
Father Pitstick will speak on “PR4:Prayerful, Practical Preparation for Proclamation.”
Conferences will provide ways for those interested to become better lectors through growing in knowledge and familiarity with the Sacred Scriptures, reflecting on the privileged role of the lector in proclaiming anew the Word of the Lord, recognizing and capitalizing on resources God provides to help us reverently incarnate his Word, and by learning effective techniques from practical experience. All are welcome.
The cost is $30 with a schedule of rosary, conferences with a question-and-answer session, reflection time, confessions, lunch and Mass.
In addition, IHRC’s Catechetical Evenings of Prayer continue.
• The eighth Evening of Prayer will be Tuesday, Aug. 31. Father Brian Mee, pastor of St. Peter Parish in Spokane, will speak on Chapters 22-24 of the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults. Topics include Sacramentals and Popular Devotions, the Foundations of the Christian Moral Life and Principles of the Christian Moral Life.
Cost is $35.
Mass begins at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 5:35 p.m. Conferences start at 6:30 p.m., with a question-and-answer session and reflection time.
