Lay leadership directs Eastern Washington’s Charismatic Renewal
by Deacon Eric Meisfjord, Editor, Inland Register
(From the Aug. 19, 2010 edition of the Inland Register)
Bishop Skylstad has appointed three laity to act as liaisons for the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in the Spokane Diocese: Madre Kuhle, Mike Lamb, and Miguel de la Mora.
Father Dan Wetzler, long-time liaison for the diocese’s Charismatic community, will now act as the group’s spiritual director.
Kuhle will be the liaison; Lamb, co-liaison; and de la Mora, co-liaison for the Hispanic Charismatic community.
In an article she wrote for the magazine Pentecost Today, Kuhle described the role of the liaison as “a vital link to the heart of the Church. That role brings to the bishop’s attention the work of the Renewal, the intent and desire to be faithful, yet listen to the promptings of the Spirit. The role produces validation and opportunity for communication with the broader borders of Church officialdom.”
Madre Kuhle (left), originally from Minnesota, moved to Spokane in 1966.
She has been involved in leadership with the Charismatic Catholic community in Spokane since the mid-1980s, including time as co-chair of the Service Team, conference chairperson, board of directors, and leader of Life in the Spirit seminars.
From 2005-2009 she served with Father Wetzler as co-liaison for the Spokane Diocese.
She has served parishes, including the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes and Our Lady of the Lake in Suncrest, as a religious education teacher, and has been involved in music ministry for the Suncrest parish for many years.
She has five children and 10 grandchildren.
Mark Lamb (right) grew up in Spokane Valley.
He has been a religious education teacher and youth group leader on the parish level, and serves the Steubenville Northwest youth ministry as prayer ministry coordinator. Lamb leads the all-city Charismatic prayer meeting that meets at St. Joseph Parish, Spokane.
He is married and has two children.
Miguel De la Mora (left) has been active in the Charismatic Renewal for 14 years (“De la Mora named co-liaison for Hispanic Charismatic Affairs,” IR 2/25/10).
He has been a member of St. Patrick Parish, Pasco, for more than 30 years, where he serves on the Parish Pastoral Council.
More than 600 individuals attended the Hispanic Charismatic Congress in Pasco last November.
De la Mora will be especially involved with the Charismatic prayer groups in Pasco, Othello, Connell, and Walla Walla.
Father Wetzler (right)was ordained a priest of the Spokane diocese in 1963.
He was named diocesan director of the Charismatic Renewal in 1976. His other assignments include teaching at Mater Cleri Seminary in Colbert, assistant pastor, diocesan director of the Catholic Youth Organization, and pastor of parishes in Tekoa, Rockford, Othello, Connell, Eltopia, and Spokane.
He retired from active ministry in 2002.
