Peggy Sammons retires as Our Place Co-Director
by Mitch Finley, Inland Register staff
(From the Aug. 19, 2010 edition of the Inland Register)
With a few brief times away for various reasons, Peggy Sammons was active at Our Place since its beginning more than 20 years ago. Recently, however, for health related reasons, she decided to retire as co-director in which role she had served since 2006 with co-director Holy Names Sister Ann Pizelo.
Sammons was a member of the original organizing committee for Our Place and worked with the organization off and on until she became assistant director under Holy Names Sister Marcia Schrapps.
Eventually, the board Our Place asked her to become director – at that time an unpaid position. “It’s been kind of a merry-go-round ride,” she said with a chuckle. “But (Our Place) is an amazing place.”
Community awareness of Our Place has improved considerably, she said, and there has been an increase in donations and in the availability of volunteers.
“Still, it’s the best kept secret in town. I hope that as time goes on that I’ll be able to go back in a volunteer capacity or to serve on the board,” she said. “I hope that when people think about giving that they’ll think of Our Place. It doesn’t matter if it’s not huge amounts. If enough people give $10 a month, that adds up. A little goes a long way at Our Place, because we’re very good stewards of people’s money.”
