Twenty Oregon Province Jesuits celebrate jubilees

Twenty members of the Oregon Province of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) celebrated jubilees as an ordained priest or as a Jesuit at a special Mass during Province Days, Saturday, Aug. 14, at Gonzaga University.

“The Jesuits celebrating jubilees this year represent nearly 1,100 years of service as members of the Society of Jesus and the priesthood,” said Jesuit Father Patrick Lee, Provincial of the Oregon Province. “We celebrate their dedication to serving others as pastors, missionaries, educators, writers, administrators, chaplains, and colleagues They inspire us all to serve others and to do our best.”

70 Years in the Society of Jesus

• Father Leon P. Kapfer, praying for the Church and Society, Spokane.
• Father James B. Reichmann, professor emeritus of Philosophy, Seattle University.

60 Years in the Society of Jesus

• Father Robert J. Schlim, teacher at Community Colleges of Spokane.
• Father Delmar M. Skillingstad, assistant to academic vice president, Gonzaga University.
• Father Robert A. Goebel, praying for the Church and Society, Spokane.
• Father John J. Morris, writer in residence, Portland.
• Father Anthony P. Via, history professor, Gonzaga University.
• Father L. Paul Fitterer, campus ministry and Development Office, Seattle Preparatory School, Seattle.

50 Years in the Society of Jesus

• Father Stephen J. Kuder, theology professor, Gonzaga University, and rector of the Gonzaga University Jesuit Community.
• Father Bartholomew J. Murphy, professor of Church History, Salvatorian Institute of Philosophy and Theology, Tanzania.
• Father Charles E. Schmitz, parochial Vicar for Archdiocese of Seattle, Tacoma.
• Father James A. Sinnerud, prefect, teacher and pastoral minister, Creighton Preparatory High School, Omaha, Neb.

25 Years in the Society of Jesus

• Father Joel K. Adams, English teacher at Jesuit High School and superior of its Jesuit Community, Portland.

60 Years in the Priesthood

• Father Joseph E. Conwell, writer, Gonzaga University Jesuit Community.

50 Years in the Priesthood

• Father John J. O’Leary, pastoral minister, St. Joseph Church, Seattle.
• Father Joseph R. Retzel, co-pastor, St. Paul Mission, Hays, Mont.
• Father Thomas G. Williams, pastoral minister, Regis Community, Spokane.
• Father Kenneth W. Baker, editor, Homiletic and Pastoral Review, Pequannock, N.J.

25 Years in the Priesthood

• Father Andrew L. Maddock, currently pastor St. Ignatius Mission, St. Ignatius, Mont.
• Father William M. Watson, special projects for the Provincial, Seattle.

Every year Oregon Province Jesuits gather in summer for ordinations to the priesthood, to honor jubilarians and celebrate first vows, and for discussion and fellowship.

Presently, there are 230 Jesuits living in the Oregon Province, which is comprised of Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana.
