Catholic Youth Celebration to return next March
by Deacon Eric Meisfjord, Editor, Inland Register
(From the Oct. 21, 2010 edition of the Inland Register)
For years, youth groups and their ministers gathered each year for the Catholic Youth Congress. Later renamed the Catholic Youth Celebration, the initials remained the same – CYC – as did the intent: offering youth from not only the diocese but the entire region the opportunity to interact with one another, share stories of faith, trade ideas, and reinforce their commitment to life in Christ.
The annual celebrations were one of the unfortunate casualties of the Chapter 11 Reorganization and the loss of the diocese’s Parish Services Office, with its Youth Ministry component.
But this year a group of youth and youth ministers have come together to bring CYC back to Eastern Washington.
Scheduled for Friday-Sunday, March 18-20, the new CYC will take place at Gonzaga Prep in Spokane.
This year’s theme comes from Isaiah 43:5: “Do not fear, for I am with you.”
Workshops are still in the planning stages. Preliminary ideas call for a full slate of possibilities not only for the youth, but for the adults who minister with and for youth.
Keynote speaker is Doug Tooke of Monarch Ministry.
Tooke is a past presenter for CYC. Besides numerous workshops and keynote presentations for youth gatherings throughout the United States, Tooke serves as coordinator of the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry for the Diocese of Helena, Mont.
Also coming from Helena for the event will be the REACH team, an evangelization team specializing in working with and motivating youth.
Other workshops will be given by local presenters on a wide variety of topics.
In order to keep costs as low as possible for student participants, fund-raising is starting now. The organizing team hopes to reach a minimum of $4,000 in addition to what has already been given to the effort by generous donors.
Donations can be mailed to: CYC 2011, c/o Assumption Parish, 3624 W. Indian Trail Rd., Spokane, WA 99208.
In the meantime, the group has its own Facebook page – just type CYC 2011 into the Search box – where ministry supporters can track developments over the coming months.
