the Inland Register

(From the Nov. 11, 2010 edition of the Inland Register)

Immaculate Heart Retreat Center will hold its next Catechetical Evening of Prayer on Tuesday, Nov. 30, with Holy Names Sister Mary Garvin, a respected theologian at Gonzaga University.

Sister Mary will speak on Chapters 34-36 of the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults, divisions on the last of the Commandments of God, and on Prayer in General, and particularly, the Lord’s Prayer.

Sister Mary was chosen to review sections of the Catechism for Adults on areas of prayer before its approval by the USCCB in 2004.

The cost for an Evening of Prayer is $35. Mass begins at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 5:35 p.m. Conferences start at 6:30 p.m., with a Q & A session and time for reflection.

• IHRC is sponsoring its second Serenity Retreat of the year, titled “How Big is Your God?” Dec. 3-5.

The retreat, under the leadership of Sister Mary Schumacher of the Society of the Sacred Heart, will focus on the 12 Steps.

Sister Mary is a 21-year veteran of sobriety and a licensed professional counselor at Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif. She will address trauma and grief in the ongoing process that those in recovery from addiction and alcohol will find familiar, integrating it in the on-going process of conversion that includes many spiritual awakenings.

A special feature of this retreat is an invitation to bring two people who have never attended a retreat at Immaculate Heart. The person who brings them attends this weekend for free.

The cost of the retreat is $170, $270 for couples or $100 for commuters.

• On Dec. 8, Msgr. James Ribble, a retired priest of the Spokane Diocese, will lead a Day of Prayer, titled “Come to the Stable!”

Conferences will include answers to the questions, “When shall I go?” “What should I bring?” and “What will I find?” All are welcome.

The cost is $30 with a schedule of rosary, conferences with Q & A and time for reflection, Confessions, lunch, and Mass.

To register for these or other opportunities at Immaculate Heart, call (509) 448-1224 or visit the Retreat Center’s web site: www.IHRC.net.
