Archdiocese of Portland

PORTLAND – Archbishop John Vlazny designated Dec. 1 as 2010’s Advent Ember Day.

An Ember Day is one set aside for voluntary prayer and fasting. In the Portland Archdiocese, Ember Days are held in the seasons of Advent and Lent, as well as in the month of September.

Ember Days were reinstituted in 2002 in the archdiocese as days of prayer for victims of child sexual abuse.

PORTLAND – A record $618,000 was raised by this year’s dinner to benefit Mount Angel Seminary.

Almost 800 gathered for the dinner, held Nov. 7 in the Oregon Convention Center.

Entertainment was provided by groups of seminarians, including singers from Samoa and an Irish music band.

This was the seventh year for the benefit dinner.

Meanwhile, in Eugene, parishioners from that city and Corvallis pooled resources to host a fund-raising dinner for Mount Angel in October that brought in more than $15,000. Another seminarian music group, “La Tuna,” performed mariachi-style music.

PORTLAND – Archbishop John Vlazny ordained four men to the diaconate Nov. 13 at St. Mary Cathedral.

Ordained were Scott Kolbet, Michael Chau Pham, Kevin Fillo, and Craig Casey.
