Brush up your Shakespeare with the Gonzaga Readers Theater Project

the Inland Register

(From the Feb. 3, 2011 edition of the Inland Register)

“All the world’s a stage”—and things get pretty crazy when that stage is commandeered by the cast of the Gonzaga University Readers Theater production of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged). The show will be performed in the Magnuson Theater at GU on Feb. 24, 25, 26 at 7 p.m. The cast includes, in the front row, Jill Jacobs, Erin Fitzgerald, Mary Davis, Miles DesMarais, David FauntLeRoy, and Adam Butler; in the back row are Matt Dargen, Beth Thompson, Devin Devine, and A.J. Hostak. (IR photo by Zack Berlat, courtesy of Father Kevin Connell SJ)

On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Feb. 24-26, the Gonzaga Readers Theater Project of Gonzaga University will present The Compleat Works William Shakespeare (Abridged).

Compleat Works is the creation of the Reduced Shakespeare Company, which began in 1981 in California as a trio of starving, but very creative Shakespearean actors. The Compleat Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) is a wild, laugh-filled romp through all 37 of Shakespeare’s plays with special emphasis on Hamlet as the funniest play ever written.

Compleat has been performed by its creators and other companies literally all over the world.

Learn how all 16 of Shakespeare’s comedies are essentially the same play. Discover why his tales of English history would be perfectly at home on ESPN. Uncover which of his immortal tragedies would make a great cooking show.

The production is directed by Jesuit Father Kevin Connell, principal of Gonzaga Prep, himself a seasoned Shakespearean actor. The cast includes 10 Gonzaga University undergraduates. Many of the actors have appeared in numerous theatrical and comedy improv productions at Gonzaga and some of them just wandered into auditions and are making their first appearance on a GU stage.

The Compleat Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) will be performed at 7 p.m. on Feb. 24-26 in the Magnuson Theater in College Hall at Gonzaga University. Admission is by free-will donation. Proceeds will be donated to St. Aloysius Gonzaga High School in Nairobi, Kenya (a Jesuit school educating girls and boys orphaned by AIDS.)
