Spokane seminarian instituted to Ministry of Reader
the Inland Register
(From the Feb. 3, 2011 edition of the Inland Register)
During Mass on Sunday, Jan. 16, 54 seminarians of the Pontifical North American College (NAC), Rome, were instituted to the Ministry of Reader. Among the seminarians was Dale Tuckerman (right), a graduate of Bishop White Seminary who is now a first-year theology student studying at NAC for the Spokane Diocese.
Celebrating the Mass and instituting the new readers was Baltimore’s Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien.
“Today you are commissioned by our Church to be men of the Word,” said Archbishop O’Brien in his homily. “From this day forward we expect you to grow in a knowledge and love of the Word until that day, please God, when through the laying on of hands, you will be empowered to speak that Word that will – literally, sacramentally – move Heaven to Earth.”
The institution as reader is one of the ministries seminarians receive as they proceed toward diaconal and priestly ordination. A reader is charged with proclaiming the Word of God in the liturgical assembly, instructing children and adults in the faith, and preparing them to receive the sacraments worthily.
The Pontifical North American College just completed its 150th anniversary celebration. Founded in 1859 by Blessed Pius IX, the college serves as the American house of studies in Rome.
